Research

The research carried out by members of the Institute includes some of the most important modern mathematical disciplines:
  • Descriptive topology
  • Measure theory, probability theory, stochastic analysis
  • Functions of one and several complex variables, Hardy spaces
  • Differential operators, distributions, analysis in the space of observables
  • Convex geometry
  • Non-linear resonances
  • Spectral theory, approximation theory, orthogonal polynomials, dynamical systems
  • Axiomatisation of physics

Publications: Present and former members of the Institute have published several advanced research monographs and over 500 articles in mathematical, physical and economics journals

Scientific contacts: Members of the Institute have and have had intensive scientific contacts with leading mathematicians, including

  • 1 Nobel laureate
  • 1 Kyoto Prize winner
  • 4 Fields-Medallists
  • 2 Fellows of the Royal Society
  • 6 Salem Prize winners

Teaching

Organisation of international conferences

The Institute has been responsible for a plethora of lectures, tutorials and seminars for mathematicians, in addition to ancillary courses

The Institute has organised an unusually large number of such conferences at the highest level, for example
  • 2 “Research Semesters” at the International Erwin Schrödinger Institute in Vienna
  • Conference on the “Theory of Banach spaces” in Oberwolfach
  • 5 large scale week-long international conferences throughout Upper Austria
  • 1990-2010: A regular semiannual Analysis Seminar jointly with the Charles University Prague, the Technical University Prague, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Comenius University, Bratislava
